Accommodation options

Housing that provides additional support can be a positive choice for people living with dementia. But it is important to consider the impact of a move and balance the benefits with the possibility for it to be disorientating and potentially distressing.

The different housing options available if living in your home is no longer possible are sheltered housing, very sheltered housing or care homes. Very sheltered housing provides a higher degree of support to older people, people with a disability or people at risk. Care homes provide round the clock care and support from trained staff.

Accommodation options vary across Scotland. Age Scotland’s Guide to housing options for older people in Scotland (pdf) may help you think about what would be best for you.

Houseability is a charity providing housing information, advice, and advocacy to people with long-term health problems or disabilities, living in or wishing to relocate to Aberdeenshire. They can help you consider the best housing options for the future.

More information about accommodation options is available on Aberdeenshire Council’s website:
